Audi Brussels Car-Body Drying

Automotive

SolvAir boosts car shell drying at Audi Brussels, improving both efficiency and quality.

Innovative engineered drying solutions that maximise performance and minimise energy consumption for automotive plants.

Audi Brussels dried its car shells before the final coating with an energy-intensive compressed air system that was potentially compromising production quality. SolvAir replaced it with a custom drying system of multiple 15kW blowers and strategically placed Air Knives, which ensured thorough drying while significantly reducing energy consumption.

01 The Problem

Energy-intensive drying before the final coating

Audi Brussels faced inefficiencies in the drying of its car shells before the final coating. The existing compressed air drying system was energy-intensive and potentially compromising production quality, which called for a more effective solution for the plant’s new product line. Ahead of that launch the site had been through major improvement works to increase productivity, quality and energy efficiency, and Audi had carried out in-depth studies into the cost of compressed air drying before enquiring about a replacement.

02 The Implication

Rising costs and the risk of coating imperfections

The high energy consumption of the compressed air system was increasing operational costs and potentially affecting Audi’s sustainability goals. Inefficient drying could also lead to coating imperfections, resulting in quality issues and possible production delays in a high-precision manufacturing process.

03 The Solution

A multi-stage drying system on 15kW blowers

SolvAir provided a custom multi-stage drying system with multiple 15kW blowers and strategically placed Air Knives, designed to remove the rinse water from the car shells before the final coating. The setup ensured thorough drying of all car shell surfaces, including hard-to-reach areas, while significantly reducing energy consumption and enhancing production efficiency.
