Saica Air Curtain System
Saica Pack UK produces cardboard cartons for the fast moving consumer goods sector, and waste material building up inside its BOBST machine was forcing frequent interruptions…
Manufacturing
SolvAir's custom Air Systems optimise manufacturing processes, reducing waste and enhancing efficiency across diverse industries.
Scientific Games manufactures scratch cards, and at its conveyor belt transitions cards were becoming trapped and torn, resulting in entire batch rejections. SolvAir solved the issue with an Eco-Blow unit and two Custom Spyder Manifolds that create an air curtain, preventing card damage while reducing energy consumption.
Conveyor belt transitions in Scientific Games’ scratch card production caused significant issues. The conveyor is offset to the printing stations, so the cards pass through an S-shaped section on their way to packing, where they frequently became trapped in the gap between the belts and torn, resulting in entire batch rejections. The attempted fix, a small blower system with pipework of the customer’s own, worked to a degree but failed when extended to a second section due to insufficient airflow across multiple sections.
The persistent problem caused significant financial losses through wasted materials and production time, as scratch cards are produced in large batches of thousands and a rejection means disposing of the whole batch. The issue also demanded continuous attention from the senior project engineer, diverting resources from other crucial maintenance tasks and impacting overall operational efficiency.
SolvAir visited the site to review the process and the deflector plates already fitted beneath the conveyor, then calculated a single system to serve both points on the conveyor belts, which are one to two metres apart. The Eco-Blow unit supplies two Custom Spyder Manifolds, each featuring six adjustable arms and precision nozzles that direct the air at the deflector plates under the conveyor.
This setup created an effective air curtain, preventing any card damage. The Eco-Blow was offered because its motor-mounted inverter drive gives control of blowing speed and air pressure. Variable speed controls enabled optimised performance while reducing energy consumption: after some weeks of running, the unit was set to operate at 60% rather than full speed, reducing its power draw from 4kW to under 3kW.
Our work with Scientific Games exemplifies SolvAir’s approach to customer challenges. By thoroughly analysing their production process, we provided a solution that resolved immediate issues as well as providing long-term benefits in terms of energy savings and product consistency.
