Saica Air Curtain System

Manufacturing

SolvAir's tailored air solution eliminates system-clogging waste in Saica Pack UK's BOBST machine.

SolvAir's advanced Air Solutions ensure uninterrupted production lines for international manufacturers.

Saica Pack UK produces cardboard cartons for the fast moving consumer goods sector, and waste material building up inside its BOBST machine was forcing frequent interruptions for manual cleaning. SolvAir eliminated the blockages with a 2800mm dual inlet Air Knife and eight SV10 Nozzles, integrated with the existing BOBST machine controls.

01 The Problem

Waste building up in the BOBST machine

Saica Pack UK’s cardboard production line struggled with persistent waste material accumulation in its BOBST machine. Rubber belts in the stripping section shake the cut cardboard profiles to remove waste, but some of it passes through into the next section, where it is not removed automatically. The existing process failed to keep pace with waste generation, leading to accumulation at critical points and frequent interruptions for manual cleaning.

02 The Implication

Stoppages, labour costs and safety risks

Continuous blockages due to the ineffective waste removal system threatened Saica Pack UK’s production targets and operational reliability. Production had to stop while an operative cleaned the inside of the machine by hand, which increased labour costs, posed potential safety risks during manual cleaning and negatively impacted the company’s overall productivity and profitability.

03 The Solution

An Air Curtain System for the BOBST

SolvAir’s bespoke Air Curtain System features a 2800mm dual inlet Air Knife at the exit of the stripping section, where it creates an air barrier that deflects loose waste material backwards and stops as much of it as possible from leaving the section. Eight strategically placed SV10 Nozzles on a profiled 38mm stainless steel tube, designed to suit the very limited space, deflect waste away from eight photocell sensors that are vulnerable to waste blocking their view and causing false alarms.

The BOBST machine has numerous moving parts that give access for maintenance and for changing settings between production part designs, so the Air Knife is fixed in position while the nozzles and the connections between the Air Blowers and the air devices include flexible sections. A 15kW Air Blower supplies the Air Knife and a 4kW Air Blower supplies the nozzles, both frequency controlled and integrated with the existing BOBST machine controls, effectively eliminating waste material blockages.
